Saturday 11 May 2024: Seedling Sale at Ngataringa Organic Garden

Everyone is invited to visit Ngataringa Organic Garden as we say goodbye to our graduating winter seedlings.  Thousands of them.  Ready for planting out into your beds or containers.  As a local community garden we would love your support and know you’ll love these seedlings as much as we have 💚🌱

There’s lots of varieties available, including the super healthy kales, peas, cauliflower, a variety of onions, lettuces, celery, spinach, silverbeet, and so many more.  Ready to pop into a bed or container to get those organic winter veggies rolling for the whānau. These seedlings have been sown in sterilised recycled punnets using organic seeds and mixes to the extent possible.  Six-pack punnets often contain 10-12 plants and suggested koha is $3-$5 per punnet.

Enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and a scone or cake while you visit.  We welcome you to join us and encourage you to explore one of Te Hau Kapua / Devonport’s lovely community gardens while you are here 😊.

Sunday 21 April 2024: Ngataringa Organic Garden Society Incorporated Annual General Meeting

Our Annual General Meeting was held on Sunday 21 April at the garden. It was well attended by members and friends of the Society. Members accepted the Report from the Chair, who also elaborated on some future plans and activities, and thanked all those members who contribute to keeping the garden in great shape. Members also approved the annual accounts presented by the Treasurer, and resolved to retain the current membership fee. The Committee for the next year was elected and approved.

This was followed by a shared lunch, a tradition we have at NOG. As usual, the contributions were terrific and delivered more that everyone could eat.

Thursday 22nd February 2024: Preserves Workshop with Kathy Lambert

A very successful workshop where NOGS member Kathy demonstrated making a jam and attending members were engaged in making their own pickle to take home, run in our recently renovated NOG kitchen.

Everyone is looking forward to the next one!

Saturday 20 January 2024: OPEN DAY at NOG

We had a very successful OPEN DAY at Ngataringa Organic Garden on Saturday 20 January 2024. Lots of visitors and lots of children arrived to look around our garden and see what we do, including locals who have lived in Devonport for a long time but had never visited before. We ran the day in collaboration with Noughty Wasters Makerspace, who held their opening event at the same time at the Resource Recovery Devonport site across the road.

Saturday 20 January 2024: Pest Trapping Workshop

Another successful workshop at NOG. Nigel Hopkins demonstrated how various traps work and how to keep your garden and property free from pests that predate native species and cause plant, garden, and property damage.  This hands-on workshop also included checking the trap line running around Ngataringa Organic Garden.  Many of the attendees took away free trapping equipment to use at home.  [Nigel Hopkins is a NOGS gardener and is also Pest-Free Coordinator for Restoring Takarunga Hauraki.  He is heavily involved in facilitating trapping efforts on the peninsula.]

Sunday 26 November 2023: Working Bee

We held a very successful Working Bee at NOG on Sunday 26th November. There was a good turnout from members and we made tremendous progress on tidying up around the garden, with fence lines cleared, weeds removed, foliage clipped, spouting cleaned, old spouting removed, and the hothouse, tool shed, and shade-house given major clean-outs, with lots of rubbish and unwanted items transferred to Resource Recovery Devonport. This was followed by a shared lunch, with great food as always, and socialising. Members were responding to our mantra: OUR Garden is more than YOUR Plot.

Sunday 17 September 2023: Kitchen Opening Celebration

We have now completed the repairs to our kitchen/meeting space, thanks to the generous donations identified below and a huge amount of voluntary labour from members. We held a shared lunch to celebrate the re-opening of this important space, and to thank everybody involved on 17th September. This was attended by 40 members and the pizza over was kept very busy.

We are really indebted to Bunnings Glenfield, who donated framing and other timber, gib board, skirting, vinyl flooring, and flat pack cupboards, and delivered it to the site free of charge (around $8000 worth). Please support Bunnings Glenfield, as they have been so generous with this donation to Ngtaringa Organic Garden Society.

We are also very grateful for a $5000 grant from Global Action Plan Oceania, recently rebranded as Resource Recovery Devonport (and formerly the Devonport Community Recycling Centre). This allowed us to pay for bolts, nails, paint, sealer, extra gib, and the under-sink cabinet we needed, as well as contribute to the costs of our plumber and electrician in making these repairs. Do support our neighbours, Resource Recovery Devonport, as well.

Sunday 25 June 2023: Composting Workshop

We held a successful Composting Workshop for NOGS members, delivered by Pip from the Compost Collective, for everyone to learn more about improving composting practices.

Sunday 19 February 2023: Working Bee

A Working Bee from 10am-12 noon, to clean up communal areas around the garden. This was followed by a brief General Meeting to at 12.00 noon to update members on progress towards becoming an Incorporated Society, and then by a shared lunch.

Sunday, December 11, 2022: Special General Meeting

A Special General Meeting of NOG members was held to discuss and approve NOG becoming an Incorporated Society, where we considered the proposed Constitution and Rules for the new Ngataringa Organic Garden Society Incorporated, and the associated Responsibilities of NOGS Members document. This was followed by our annual Xmas shared lunch
