Ngataringa garden operates on an allotment system, with around 65 plots allocated to individual or family plot-holders.
We have a communal herb plot and some communal fruit trees on site – bananas, plums, lemons, avocados, custard apples – as well as chickens, with eggs available for sale to members.
We have a wide range of facilities on-site that are available for all members to use, including:
- A function room with kitchen facilities;
- Toilets;
- Hot-house;
- Tool-shed and large garden tools.
The garden is overseen by a committee, and we hold our AGM in April.
We also hold special meetings, working bees (between two and four times per year), and social events (held irregularly but always includes a Christmas event).
The primary purposes of the Society are to:
- encourage organic gardening for healthy living and wellbeing within the local community
- provide facilities, resources and land for members to further their organic gardening practices
- promote community gardens and organic gardening within the wider community
- improve biodiversity and soil health to allow organic gardening to thrive
- foster collegiality and cooperation expressed in the tikanga of “OUR garden is more than YOUR plot”
- operate in a not-for-profit manner.
